I joined Ratchaphruek Hospital on a consulting contract in February 2023. My many years of previous work in Asia, especially my previous experiences working in universities establishing international student programs and student services departments stood me in good stead. These activities focused on international student needs and support by initiating thorough institutional training and preparation. It rapidly became obvious to me that the required intercultural skills and experiences were transferable.  The intense focus on the humanistic aspects of international education and international healthcare required similar organizational structures and management applications. Both require a dedicated approach to a person-centred philosophy.

The creation of a new International Patient Services Department at Ratchaphrueck in 2023 was centred around the use of Patient Advocates that would be assigned to each Medical Travel Patient who is admitted to the hospital. These patients included persons who we describe as “ex-pats” as they may also share challenges with language-related communications. As well, certain issues may arise due to a misunderstanding due to cultural differences. We are pleased to note that the reduction in patient uncertainty and concern has become very obvious and has been confirmed through the positive increase in patient compliments in their testimonials.

International patients entering Ratchaphrueck Hospital can expect to receive patient centered care from first contact through to hospital discharge. We take great pride in continuing to offer service as an advocate for a patient after they return home by continuous check-ins and assisting with follow-up appointments with your doctor. I am very satisfied leading this team of caring individuals and I respect the compassion they demonstrate towards our patients during their healthcare journey.
