The lead architect of Ratchaphruek Hospital, embracing both international and local influences, has created a hospital that goes beyond traditional medical environments by focusing on holistic healing. This philosophy led to a unique architectural approach that prioritizes both functional efficiency and spiritual comfort.
Background
Our design is focused on three core principles
Ratchaphruek Hospital has been serving the community for over 20-30 years. However, after two decades of operation, the hospital faced overcrowding and an increasingly dense environment. Dr. Teerawat, the hospital's president, who regards patients as individuals rather than customers, recognized the need for a new approach—one that would focus on creating a healing environment rather than a conventional medical facility.
With a vision to break away from traditional hospital designs, Dr. Teerawat sought a designer to bring this vision to life. The challenge was clear: how could a hospital be reimagined to prioritize healing and well-being, while moving beyond the rigid frameworks of typical hospital architecture? The architect, who had no prior experience designing healthcare facilities, saw this as an opportunity to explore new dimensions of hospital design.
The journey began with a deep study of the local context in Khon Kaen, where the new hospital would be built. Understanding the environment, culture, and daily lives of the people was essential. It was not merely about constructing a building—it was about creating a space that felt like home, one that harmonized with the way people lived and interacted. The goal was to design a hospital that would truly belong to the community, much like building a house that fits naturally within its surroundings.

The hospital features a central courtyard that simplifies navigation, ensuring easy orientation without confusion or stress. This design not only aids in wayfinding but also contributes to a calm and orderly patient experience.
Spiritual and Community Spaces
The hospital accommodates the spiritual needs of its diverse patient base with dedicated areas for different religious practices, including a Brahma shrine, a Christian prayer room, and an Islamic prayer space, each designed to cater to specific practices and offer privacy.
Local Motifs and Materials
The use of local materials and cultural motifs, such as the "Lai Ta Laew" pattern, connects the hospital aesthetically and spiritually to the community. This pattern, traditionally found on medicine pots believed to ward off bad luck, has been woven into the architectural details, symbolizing the hospital as a vessel of healing.
